Richard Valbuena of Makati City, Philippines blew me away with the many things he saw in the guitar case shape. Below are the examples that I felt were most original. (Yes, people who can illustrate with flair can entertain our eyes. To take nothng away from the fancy execution by Richard and others here, the imagination it took to see these great images in the simple guitar shape is what excites me most.)

Some new executions of the Guitar Case History "coloring inside the lines" creative exercise. These are three of the interpretations made by Edmar from the Philippines.

And my favorite from Edmar...

I try to feature executions I have not seen before. I’m quite sure I’ve not seen this treatment before. (Okay, maybe I saw something similar in a Vincent Price movie back in my youth.)

Thanks, Edmar, for pushing the boundaries and keeping the exercise alive. These last two images alone, your “bow from the back” and “eyeball appetizer” help to illustrate the point of this exercise... both were inspired by the same simple guitar case shape. I love the human imagination!

Ester, that is just crazy-beautiful! I actually had one of those moments of pure delight when I saw your swimming pool. Do you think you were subliminally influenced by your name? LOL

This week, I gave each of my 3D Design students (high school level) a piece of 8x8" paper. Then I asked them to cut a hole in it big enough for me to walk through. No tape, no glue, just a pair of scissors. It took about 35 minutes for someone in the class to figure out the solution. And the rest of them had that beautifiul"ah-ha" look. Kind of like the delight I had when looking at Ester's guitar case.

Yo, anybody else wanna' play? It's never too late to make a comment. Parents, print out the worksheet and let the kids have a try. Managers, print out the worksheet and let the kids have a try.

For those of you who dig these kinds of visual challenges you might be interested in this web site - http://www.boxdoodle.com/ - a very cool exercise using corrugated boxes.Link courtesy of Arash and Kelly. Where Ester, above, turned something two dimensional into 3D, the boxdoodle exercise turns something three dimensional into 2D. Anyone who went to my camps in the '90's might recall what we did with corrugated boxes. We took something 3D and kept it 3D. I guess you'd have to have been there. If I find the old snap shots, I'll do a post.

Hey, Arash and Kelly, who said you can vote? This is America. There's no place for democracy.

Actually, readers, Arash and Kelly are from the UK. I visited their site. They offer some cool stuff to encourage creative thinking like the Genius Pad, a huge sticky note, and their Little Genius workstation for toddlers, or junior art directors.

Check it out.

Yes, Ester, you're disqualified for folding the paper.

You're kidding, right? This is brilliant. One of the criteria I'm using to decide which exercise solutions to post is originality. This is in a whole 'nother world of originality. I've been doing this exercise for years and haven't seen anyone use the 3rd dimension of paper yet.

Yes, Ester (Williams, right?) you broke the rules. Hell, you broke the ruler (see my post "If you’re going to break the rules, you have to break the ruler.")

Well done!

Fun exercise, nice to see how we see things differently. I hope you don't mind that I folded the paper.
