Katie, I'd say "great minds think alike," but I don't think I'm allowed to use that phrase again in my life time.

I've been carrying a notebook around for ages to write stuff down when it comes to me. I can't tell you how wonderful it is to remember an idea, or a project I thought of months ago, and then to look back in my notebook and see all the planning I did for it then. Saves me from having to reinvent the wheel all the time!

Tom Edison, it's been said, kept a note pad by his bed for just such thoughts at waking (and he took waking thought very seriously - see previous post Sleep on it,). I've been carry a pad of Posit-it notes in my pocket ever since I read this. The only problem with recording all your ideas is that a good many of them don't make a lot of sense, or just plain suck, in the light of a new day. On the other hand, some of them get even better in fresh light, when you have the benefit of objectivity (after they've been through a few wash cycles, Gary). Go figure.

There's times I get a great idea, although not on the order of solving the AIDS crisis or anything, but maybe an idea for a concept that I forget because I go onto something else.

Even though I try and remind myself not to forget it, I often do. I also notice that I have some ideas just before waking up that I'm just not alert enough to remember to write down.

Write it down. Simple but brilliant. Although I'm far from simple and seldom brilliant, I've been doing it for years. Why? In this fast-paced, digital, high tech world few things ... no scratch that, NOTHING beats a pencil note on a piece of paper, and it doesn't matter how good you are. Every now and again, a wee scribble, a swift jotting, a tiny scrawl of an inkling (no pun intended) gets salted away. Over scraps of paper that just get wadded up in a pocket somewhere, only to be "rediscoved" once the offending pair of trousers or shirt has gone through the washing machine, I recommend LBBs (little black books). Paperchase makes LBBs with little elasticated thingys to keep them closed that fit in a pocket or purse. And Moleskin books, although a little more expensive are great too.
